In
the book of Galatians, Paul addresses the subject of walking in the
Spirit. He says in chapter 5, verses 16-18, "walk in the
Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the
flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh;
and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the
things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not
under the law".
Trying
to live under the law is impossible without grace. It is only
through the grace of God, and the supreme sacrifice of Jesus Christ,
that anyone can live in a manner which could be considered
truly righteous. With that said, to live righteously should be our
goal. We should desire the things of God, and the well-being of
others. Yet, it often seems difficult to "walk in the
Spirit". As Paul so succinctly pointed out, the flesh and
Spirit "are contrary to one another". They are opposite
and opposed! An experience I had once, may help to explain how the
flesh and Spirit interact. While on a back packing trip in the Pecos
Wilderness of New Mexico, I remember seeing beautiful mountain goats
(rams...like the Dodge symbol) battling it out one morning outside
of our camp. The rams would face off, and then run at one another,
colliding head on with incredible force and noise. I watched in awe
as they did it over and over again. They would hit one another with
such energy, their back feet would come completely off of the
ground! Eventually, the weaker of the two beasts would trot away,
leaving the victor to enjoy his newly acquired territory. Quite
frankly, after awhile, it started to give me a headache! In
much the same way, the Spirit and the flesh are at battle within
us.
