What Say Ye?

It seems that many people were horrified by the word Vice President Joe Biden used recently when referring to the passage of the health care reform bill. It was "caught" on tape by the ultra sensitive microphones that were recording the historic address by he, and the President. My thought? Why be surprised? Just think about the shows on prime time television!
What type of language will you hear on a prime time show, any day of the week? How about the Tonight Show, or David Letterman? You will hear perverse, and profane words. The Bible tells us in 2 Timothy 2:16 to "shun profane, vain babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness." Many shows, movies, books, and internet sites are filled with profane and vain babblings, yet many don't seem to mind.  My middle school son tells me that most of the kids at school use some form of profanity. Most often, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Perverse talk is only a symptom of a much greater problem. Sure, the vice president shouldn't have used that language, for it is an indication of his heart. Luke 6:45 states, "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks." So apparently, the problem is MUCH BIGGER than the use of a "nasty" word!

The very fact that "socialized health care" has just been passed in opposition to the wishes of the majority of the citizens of the United States of America, is a result of continual compromise in regard to Godly principles. In Galatians 5:9 it says, "A little leaven leavens the whole lump." In other words, a little sin that is allowed, can have devastating effects overall. If there are things that we allow in our lives that oppose God the Father, no matter how small, we are in sin, and need to repent. We may believe we can justify what we say or do by comparing our actions with those of others. But for Christ followers, the standard is not set by those around us. The standard is God's Holy Word. It should be the measuring stick we use to determine if words, television shows, political stances, etc. are acceptable or not. This union of states (United States of America) didn't get where it is today overnight. Barak Obama is not the one who orchestrated our present predicament. He is merely conducting a concerto that was begun years ago. The children of Israel had similar problems to those we face today. They were not satisfied. They had many wants and desires. They were distracted by idols, false teachings, and the like. They turned away from the God of their fathers, and sought a king. The king wasn't the answer! Saul failed miserably! God was, and has always been, the answer. Our political system; our president; our governmental officials are not the answer! Health care reform isn't the answer! JESUS CHRIST IS ANSWER!

It was before my life time that the downward moral slide of America began, but that shouldn't stop me from being pro active in trying to reverse it. Just because our country is not presently in line with TRUTH, doesn't mean we as Christ followers should give up. We should never give up...unless we have never fully surrendered our lives to Jesus...THEN we should give up to HIS WILL and HIS WAYS! Funny, how so many people "get up in arms" about the use of a four letter word by a man who doesn't claim to have a powerful walk with Jesus Christ...yet the same people will continue to watch a television show that offends the Holy Spirit in them, because they don't want to miss that episode. Remember church, idolatry can be anything that replaces our affection and devotion to Jesus Christ! We need to start getting serious about our relationship with Jesus! We are either focusing on HIM as the MAIN ATTRACTION, or we are being lead astray by some vain distraction. Don't be condemned by TRUTH, be convicted! A Christ follower who is a person of STRONG BIBLICAL CONVICTIONS will make better decisions, and will NOT be a constant victim of circumstance, moral relativism, or human error in general. (Read 2 Peter 3:14-18 NKJV).

Hopefully, you would never use the profanity Vice President Biden used when he passed the podium to Barak Obama. However, some in the church today, don't seem to object to its use. They, like so many Christians have conformed their communication to that of the world. As a matter of fact, not long ago, a teenage girl in our church told me that her dad's favorite word was the the "f" word. I asked her to repeat herself, thinking I had misunderstood. To my disappointment, I had not misunderstood. She was struggling with a faith shaking contradiction. Her father consistently instructed her to study the Bible, pray, and live right, yet constantly lost his temper and used profanity in her presence. She wanted to know if his behavior was o.k. or not. I reminded her of Ephesians 4:29-31, which says, "Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice." Without a doubt, her father's use of profanity was wrong according to God's Word. In her spirit she knew it was, but she needed confirmation. When Jesus walked on the earth as a man, He spoke words of Truth without compromise. He communicated in a way which honored His Father in Heaven. The young girl understood that her dad's profanity was a contradiction of Godly behavior, however, her dad was supposed to be her example. As a result, she questioned everything he had ever taught her that was good. Think about it. Has the church done similar things in the past? Have we spoken out against things like abortion, and homosexuality, yet, allowed other things that are displeasing to God to go unchecked? Have we stood up for righteousness, only to mutely sit down when popular opinion seemed too strong to resist? If we have, we should repent! If we're guilty of doing it now, we must STOP! We must ask the Lord to reveal any leaven within the church. We must pray for boldness to confront it, and remove it.

Ultimately, we are responsible for our words and actions. We are accountable. "The power of life and death is in the tongue." "We are to be doers of the Word and not hearers only." No one else is responsible for YOU. If we aren't willing to turn off television shows, walk out of movies, close books, or shut down the internet that uses words, and displays anti-Christ sentiments or behavior that offends the Holy Spirit in us, WHAT WILL WE STAND FOR?! It has been said, "The person who stands for nothing, will fall for anything." I want to stand up for Jesus! I want to stand up for Biblical values and morals! I want to be counted with the faithful who will NOT COMPROMISE the TRUTH of GOD'S WORD for ANY REASON! How about you? Where do you stand? On what do you stand? With WHOM DO YOU STAND? What say ye?

Until next time, be blessed with God's BEST!
